Make your own ketchup from overripe tomatoes

From overripe tomatoes you can make a delicious ketchup yourself. A recipe that should not be missing at any summer barbecue!

700  g ripe tomatoes
3   onions
2   Garlic
   some chili (fresh or as a powder)
   Juice of half a lemon
   a pinch of cinnamon
3  TL Sugar (alternatively also honey or agave syrup)
2  EL Olive oil
   Salt and pepper

Step 1

Peel garlic and onions and cut into small pieces.

Step 2

Remove the green stalk of the tomatoes and cut the tomatoes into small pieces.

Step 3

Heat the oil in a saucepan. Fry the onions and garlic in it until translucent.

Step 4

Sprinkle sugar over onions and garlic and caramelize. If you don't want sugar in ketchup, you can also use honey or agave syrup.

Step 5

Add tomatoes, lemon juice and spices and simmer for about 15 minutes.

Step 6

Once the tomatoes are soft: Remove from heat and puree with a hand blender.

Step 7

If you like it fine, you can spread the tomato mass through a sieve.
